Using the LinkedIn API for Enterprise Knowledge Management

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

A few weeks ago, Chris, author of The Global Human Capital Journal, asked a question on LinkedIn. He asked if anyone had experience using the LinkedIn API in enterprise applications. In response to his question, I created a sample knowledge management application that simulates the enterprise and uses the LinkedIn API to populate user profiles.

You can login to the application to see how the API works from the perspective of a user, or you can view this video that walks through a sample scenario.

Web snapshot brainstorm

Friday, May 15th, 2009

I’ve been quiet for a while as I’ve been busy with other work. But as I worked, I’ve kept the web snapshot application in the back of my mind. There are some new ideas for strategy that I’ve thought of, and I will be making some major revisions to the way the application works.

If you have comments or suggestions, I’m always willing to listen. For right now, I’m going to target online content distributors (blogs, magazines, etc) with my offering. The existing application is still just a prototype, but I plan on turning it into a full application over the next several months.

I plan to offer a multi-tiered solution, starting with the most basic level FREE. And offering additional features for the content distributors that need more sophistication. I haven’t identified all of the features that will be implemented, I expect market need to drive those decisions.

My immediate need is to define more clearly what my target market needs. I need to research existing tools, identify improvements, and simplify implementation. If you run a content-driven site, I want to talk to you. You can play a part in guiding the direction this takes – please comment and/or contact me.

Updates to snapshot generator

I updated the snapshot generator again today, mostly non-visual application programming changed. I fixed some small bugs and added safety checks to the variables received to the scripts.

Updates to web snapshot generator

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Thanks to Sam’s suggestions I’ve made some changes to the web snapshot generator. At his request I’ve added features to:

  1. email the snapshot directly to yourself or a friend
  2. open the “save file” dialog directly
  3. or (optionally) edit the image in picnik

Thanks for your comments Sam!

Generating a snapshot of a web page and cropping it in the browser

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Success! I now have a working version of the mashup to grab a snapshot of a webpage, pass it to picnik, and allow the user to save the result.

I also added a bookmarklet that allows you to take a snapshot of the current page on your browser. Just add it to your favorites/bookmarks and click it to take a snapshot of the page.

*Note: I was having trouble with picnik in Firefox3. I don’t know why this was a problem, but it looks like there is a bug on Picnik’s side. Hopefully it will be fixed by the time you read this.
